BATTERED, TATTERED, STAINED PAGES IN A CHURCH COOKBOOK

When I began collecting cookbooks in 1965, I wasn’t particular about what I collected. I would buy almost any kind of cookbook and wrote a letter to that effect to Women’s Circle magazine (a magazine that was made up of letters written by women all over the USA and many other countries in which they requested penpals – or help with their collections). In my letter to the magazine, I said I wanted to start a cookbook collection and would buy or trade for any cookbooks. When my letter was published, I received over 200 letters from women all over the USA. One of them is still a penpal of mine today. And that was how I began collecting cookbooks. Early on, I was introduced to club-and-church cookbooks or community cookbooks; actually, the first one I ever owned was a little Methodist cookbook published by a church in Cincinnati; a coworker of my father was selling them for a dollar each so Dad bought one for me, one for my mother and one for my sister. It was the first cookbook of its kind that I had ever seen and I was enchanted. I wondered if there were more cookbooks like these “out there”. Little did I know!

Thousands (perhaps millions) of cookbooks of this genre are published every year and have been ever since their inception during the American Civil War in the 1800s
when women wanted to do something to raise funds for the sanitation department.
A new kind of cookbook was born and this type of cookbook has been hugely successful in raising money for their various enterprises. Not surprisingly, a community cookbook, one published by your local church or club, is a cookbook that gets a lot of use. I can speak from experience – the first club cookbook I participated in publishing was a PTA cookbook in 1971; it’s one of the first cookbooks I turn to for certain favorite recipes. My sister Becky and I both participated in working on, and contributing recipes for, community cookbooks for local churches and clubs for many years. We finally published a family cookbook in 2004. Years ago, I began seriously collecting community cookbooks published in Cincinnati, Ohio, my home town.

And, if you collect cookbooks for any length of time, you will discover that the crème de la crème of club cookbooks are those published by Junior Leagues throughout the country and perhaps at a later date I can devote an entire Blog post to those –
What I want to write about today are battered, tattered, stained cookbooks (and there are many in my collection); sometimes the covers are missing or at best, are equally stained. Sometimes recipes have been handwritten into the cookbook, where ever a space could be found. One of my favorites, a cookbook titled “Culinary Capers” was published by the Woman’s Club of Burbank (California) in 1941 and is packed to overflowing with clippings and notes scribbled on the pages, and a list on the inside cover, of favorite recipes and their respective pages. It’s almost as good (not quite) as finding an old recipe box filed with someone else’s favorite recipes, written on cards, or clipped from magazines and newspapers and pasted onto index cards. Sometimes the clippings are simply “as is”, not pasted neatly on cards, just folded over and kept, along with recipes cut from bags and boxes of food. The same is true of what can often be found inside someone’s old treasured cookbook. Sometimes what I find has absolutely nothing to do with food or cooking – such as an itemized receipt from Montgomery Oldsmobile in Houston Texas, dated January 10, 1978, for what appears to have been car repairs, found folded neatly inside the Burbank “Culinary Capers”. Also found inside Culinary Capers were three small blank envelopes taken from Helena Motor Hotel in Houston. All of which begs the question in my mind-Did the former owner of Culinary Capers once live in Houston? Or did he/she have work done on her car while in Houston on his/her way back to California? And even though many of the clippings are from the mid 1970s, with some from the 1960s, this particular cookbook was published in 1941. It is replete with ads of businesses no longer active in Burbank. One notable exception is a large ad from Ralph’s grocery store – Ralph’s is now a large supermarket chain throughout Southern California, owned by Kroger’s.

What is tantalizing curious about handwritten recipes inside a church or club cookbook –aside from those written on available space inside the book (and sometimes a few pages were left blank for just that purpose) – is finding recipes written on whatever appears to have been handy—not just plain paper or envelopes (or the backs of used envelopes) but small calendars—and oddly – the paper backing from a roll of contact paper and a recipe written on part of the paper packaging from a pair of ladies’ stockings. It appears that recipes were written on anything usable if not completely suitable. I can remember my mother saving every scrap of paper to re-use however possible; this frugality dates back to the Great Depression, I believe.

I have gathered together a small stack of some of my favorite old club and church cookbooks – if they have any value, it would be negligible, I think, because of the poor condition of the books. They are all truly battered, tattered, and stained. Some have missing covers; some are almost impossible to date – such as Keystone Cookbook compiled by the Keystone Class of Methodist Church in Fairview Oklahoma. The front cover is missing; pages are shredded and torn. The back cover, taped repeatedly to the rest of the book, invites readers to see “The New Beauty”. Chevrolet’s Greatest Accomplishment – a six cylinder car in the price range of a four, and says Phone 61 for Voohees Chevrolet in Fairview. Inside is an ad for Smith Drug store, Phone 85, and an ad for a Maytag wringer washer predates anything I have ever seen (My mother in law had a wringer washer in 1958 when I married her son—the one in this ad is a much older model).

Another old cookbook with both front and back covers missing (but a favorite for all the rhymed recipes and poems found inside) is Rio Bravo Farm Home Department Cookbook; ads pinpoint the source of this cookbook to be somewhere around Bakersfield, California, a city about 2 hours’ north of Los Angeles (depending on traffic).
All of the bread/cake/sandwich/cookies and pies sections are heavily spattered. And another curiosity, one of the compilers of this cookbook was named Elnora – a name I have only heard once before, that of my best friend’s mother who lived for many years in San Bernardino. What I love most about this old cookbook are the poems. Some years ago when I was writing for a cookbook collectors’ newsletter (CCE—Cookbook Collectors Exchange) I wrote an article about rhymed recipes and became fascinated with this type of recipe. Or, poems about food or cooking or the kitchen – it’s one of my favorite mediums and I would like to write an article for a future post in my Blog about rhymed recipes. For now, here’s a short verse under the heading of Pies:

“A glance in the kitchen window as I am passing by,
Reveals a pretty picture—fair Crissy making pie,
Sleeves to her dimpled elbows, flour on her arms and hands;
Beside the oaken table in graceful pose she stands.”

What does that evoke? A dim memory of a time when all pie crust was made from scratch and pie making was such a coveted art form – any young woman worth her salt could create homemade pies.

Also much used, stained and battered and tattered – with many of its pages flaking off into tiny bits – is one titled “Badger Cookbook” compiled by the “Married Ladies; Sodality of St. Patrick’s Church” in Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1909. While the book has both front and back covers, they are detached. This book has definitely seen better days and spent a lot of time in the kitchen.

Another with both front and back covers missing can be pinpointed to Los Angeles and appears to be, judging from the ads, early 1900s- but I can’t even tell you what the title was; There is a club woman’s prayer on the first intact page. The ads are possibly the most interesting feature of the book – who else would want it, except me? And where did I find it? Now, that’s a mystery too. In 1965 I began buying whatever I could find, where ever I could find them. Such as “Cook Book Arranged by Woman’s Auxiliary of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lubbock Texas,” published in 1922. (This one is actually in fair condition—it has both front and back covers although some of the front cover has worn away.) Far less intact – the front cover is missing – is The Oxford New Century Cookbook which was published by the Ladies Aid Society of the First Baptist Church in Oxford NY in 1912—on the back cover is a detailed ad for a Hoosier Cabinet You can find these in antique stores in Ohio. Back in the day, kitchens were not so amply furnished as they are today; one’s kitchen cabinet held everything the lady of the house needed to make her bread, cakes, pies, and cookies. I had a kitchen cabinet when I first married in 1958 but it got left behind when we moved to California. (Some years ago when my sister and I were house-and-child sitting for our brother, while he and his wife were in Holland, we spent a day exploring the antique shops in Waynesville, Ohio. I was shocked at the prices of those Hoosier cabinets nowadays!)

One of the very oldest church cookbooks in my possession—with covers intact–albeit taped, actually has hard covers (most of the old ones had covers made with a light cardboard or something very much like construction paper) – this one was published by the Ladies of the First Presbyterian Church in Dayton, Ohio in 1886—and somehow survived over a hundred years of wear and tear in the kitchen. For, in the final analysis,
that was the purpose of cookbooks – to be used in the kitchen, where they might become battered, tattered, and stained…a clear indication of the cookbook’s worth to some aspiring housewife learning how to cook and bake. And who could have guessed that someday thousands of collectors would come along, hoping to find pristine copies of those very cookbooks? The whole purpose of a cookbook was to be used—to teach how to cook certain things, how to bake bread, pies, cakes and other pastries that require exact measurements. This also begs the question – if you find something very, very old and its in pristine condition – does this mean the recipes weren’t very good? Might we not assume that a battered, tattered, stained church or club cookbook must be full of wonderful recipes?

Happy Cooking!
Sandy

  1. Hi Sandy, I loved your post on community cookbooks. I too love them and edited a collection of favorite recipes from 85 community cookbooks from organizations across America. The title is Recipes Worth Sharing…Recipes & Stories from America’s Most-Loved Community Cookbooks. And I am currently working on More Recipes Worth Sharing…a second helping! You can also find the largest selection of Junior League Cookbooks in one place at http://www.cookbookmarketplace.com. Thank you for supporting these wonderful cookbooks! Sheila – Collierville, TN

    • Thanks, Sheila; can you give me some more information about the cookbooks you have edited? I did all the editing on the first PTA cookbook I was involved with – and all of the editing on the family cookbook – plus some of the editing on an office cookbook (its a lot of work, I know) – but I’d like to hear more! I am hoping to get a collection of my sister’s recipes published, eventually.

  2. Sandy, thanks for asking about my wonderful job. I really do have a very unique and interesting field. I have met so many wonderful people, all over the country and have, through their cookbooks, learned so much about cities, towns, organizations, traditions and of course, best of all the regional foods. For over 18 years I have work with organizations and individuals on the development, manufacturing, marketing, and selling of their cookbooks. With so much changing in our world, on-line retailers, social networking, media (blogs), food tv, it has become more and more challenging for volunteers to get their cookbooks some attention. I wanted to do something that would share the history of community cookbooks, how they have contributed so very much back to their communities and even more to America through sharing the stories, the recipes and giving a glimpse into the lives of others. Community cookbooks are regarded as some of the most significant documents to Culinary Historians – these books tell what real people were eating at the time the book was published. Not what a creative chef was conjuring up. So with the compilation cookbooks – each recipe has been submitted as a favorite recipe from a committee – the book title and organization, city and state are always given credit. It has been such a learning experience for me to compile a cookbook – I’ve been telling people how to do it all these years, but doing it is another thing all together. I’m happy to report that I have been giving good information, but I also have even more admiration for all of those volunteers that put their heart and soul into a cookbook – all for a common cause. Working on More Recipes Worth Sharing right now…hope to have it ready for publication fall 2010! So keep a look out for it. Cheers! Sheila

    • Thanks for all the information about FRP cookbooks, Sheila. I didn’t realize at first that you were someone who works professionally at producing cookbooks (there are a lot of amateurs like myself out there, helping to put cookbooks together on a much smaller scale). That being said, I have been researching junior leagues throughout the day, trying to learn more about them. Will be posting an article about the junior leagues & their cookbooks in the very near future. I can’t think of any job that would be more exciting than what you do!

    • Sheila, I appreciated the opportunity to write about Recipes Worth Sharing. I mailed a box of stuff to you today –
the Office cookbook and my family cookbook plus some photos of recipe boxes – and a lot of recipes I copied from Jr League cookbooks.

  3. Sandy: I love your blog. My parents had a huge collection of cookbooks. They had many of the church and organization type along with several Junior League ones. I have been listing them as time permits in my store which I recently started. They had so many items and I simply decided that it was time to let others enjoy them as they did. I remember my Dad sitting for hours at a time reading cookbooks from cover to cover. He absolutely loved trying the old recipes. I have almost 3000 listed at this point and am still working on getting more ready to list. It is a very time consuming task however at the same time it is an incredible amount of fun. I find that I am looking thru them also as I list them. Just brings back a lot of memories. I will be checking your site to see what you discuss next. Have a GREAT day. Eric
    foundtreasuresden@ecrater.com

    • Eric, I thoroughly enjoyed your message. You have your work cut out for you; I was going to catalog all of my cookbooks & got over 500 Christmas cookbooks listed when I gave up (we had to move & that became a priority)–I’d be interested in hearing from you again & how you decide to sell the cookbooks. Are you going to try Ebay? Regards, Sandy

  4. I’m looking for a community cookbook. I believe it is called Community Favorites Meat Magic. It is filled with recipes from WI women’s clubs. I believe it was published in the 60’s Thanks you

    • Hi, Connie – will see if I have it or if anyone reading this post has one to offer to you.
I have quite a lot of the books published in the 60s-70s by Favorite Recipes Press but will have to check to see if I have one just on the topic of meats. I know I have more than one of those books all about desserts. Can you come up with an exact title? Am willing to try & help you find it. Regards, Sandy

    • Hello again, Connie: I dont seem to have the cookbook you are searching for. I have THREE from Favorite Recipes Press on meats – one is Favorite Mormon Recipes for Meats, another the Republication Woman’s Cookbook on meats and the third Favorite Recipes from Southern Kithens on Meats from Progressive Farmer Readers. If you can come up with an exact title, I can try to help you find the one you are searching for.

  5. I live in Wisconsin and this was one of my first cookbooks. How I came up with the Community Fovorites Meat Magic title was because I was out on ebay and saw this cookbook with the title. Now the description showed the recipes were from all over U.S., I bought the cookbook because of the layout which looked so much like the cookbook I was looking for. I cookbook that I possess has fallen apart, so I don’t have the cover unfortunately. The recipes in the portion of the book that I still have look exactly as the book I purchased off of ebay only my book recipes are from women’s organizations in WI only. If the names of the women who submitted the recipes were not there, you would truly believe that the cookbook from ebay and my cookbook were the same cookbook. They are set up exactly and fount is same. So, I thought if I could look for books called Community favorites Meat Magic I could find the one I have parts of.

The cookbook I purchased on Ebay was from Favorite Recipes Press, so I thought possibly my cookbook was published by them as well.

    Thanks for all your help

  6. Hi Sandy and Connie –

I wonder if the cookbook Connie is looking for is the “Favorite Recipes of Home Economics Teachers – MEATS” – this book was originally published somewhere between 1963-65 and has been reprinted countless times. The cover has been updated and Favorite Recipes Press (FRP) recently reprinted this and four other cookbooks in this popular series. Connie – send me an email if you would like more information on this wonderful cookbook. Happy Cooking – Sheila

  7. I don’t think it is the Home Ec Teachers, the names are from women and places like: Mrs John W. Chandler, 1st VP
    Intermediate Women’s Club Beloit

    Dorthy Shaw Johnson, Reg
    DAR Kenosha

    Mrs. HC Garon, past pres
    VFW Aux, mariette

    • Hi, Connie – you might want to email Sheila & maybe she can help you whittle it down to the right cookbook. It does sound like a Favorite Recipes Press book–and she works there as an editor. Please let me know if you ever find the one you are looking for!
Meantime I’ll keep searching. Regards, Sandy

  8. Sandy, when I click on Sheila’s name I am taken to a website. Do I emaily to the Contact us from this website?

  9. Hi Sandy,

I love your blog! I have been searching for a replacement for one of my favorite, battered-tattered-stained pages in a church cookbook for 3 years now. I had this church cook book since about 1981….and it truly had some of the best recipes I have ever came across, from tuna casserole to pie crust, james to relishes. No other cook book has compared, and I have lost it during a hectic move…and I have been totally LOST without it. Both the front cover and the back have been detached for many years, so I cannot even remember what it was called?!? How helpful is that huh? I had notes written beside all my favorite recipes, such as “a little more salt”, “less sugar” etc, I’m sure you know exactly what I mean. However, this cookbook was unique in another way. It was quite a thick cookbook, and it was METAL coil bound. Not plastic coils like most, but metal coil. I don’t know if this hint (Metal) narrows it down to 20 or 2000, but I don’t think there are that many printed over time with metal coil. Also, for some reason the name St. James stands out in my head, but like I said, without my cookbook, I am lost, so I cannot be positive St. James is a lead or not. Yikes, I know this information is clear as mud, but if anyone could possibly try to solve this mystery, and bring me and my cookbook back together, I would be most greatful…..so would my family…my pie crust has never been the same 😦

    Regards,
    Lois

    • Dear Lois,
Well, maybe someone out there will recognize your book from the metal coil description–and I will go through some of mine & see if I can find any with St James. Any idea what city/state/location your book came from? We might be able to narrow it down some more if you can just remember what church published it. Not a lot had the metal coils so that’s helpful.
I think I probably have a couple dozen old church cookbooks with missing covers or coming apart at the seams/plastic bindings–I can’t throw anything away so I just hang onto them. Given the number of cookbooks published by church groups over the years, it might be impossible to figure it out if we cant narrow it down to…a city, state, church. I know of a St James in Cincinnati! An aunt of mine worked as housekeeper for the parish priest for many years. wasn’t in Cincinnati, was it?
Well, we will do what we can to help! Hopefully someone who reads my blog will recognize your book. And yes, I know the fear of losing recipes so I have mine in multiple places–on cards, in notebooks, in cookbooks. I hope I can help you find it! – Sandy

  10. Sorry, previous post should read…JAMS to relishes..not James…see, I’m lost lol.

    Thanks,
    Lois

  11. Hi Sandra,

I just got ITN and thought I would pop in to read the rest of this post. Great article. We were out over the weekend and I thought of you when we stopped at a little antiques fair. There was a “kitchenalia” booth and oh, you would have loved it. I was looking over the cookbooks and couldn’t decided which I liked best, but in the end, I thought the one that was most spattered must be the most used and loved so I got that one!

    • Hello Anna! It’s been a while since we connected; did you finally get a new computer? My son
Steve & his wife sent me one that is ‘almost new’- they bought it and then didnt use it because they both wanted (and bought) laptops (so they can watch tv and do their email at the same time). I am STILL learning how to use it & dont have access to all my files in WORD on the old computer & that is driving me crazy. But to answer your post–yes, a good old stained one is generally a good bet. You know that someone has used it a lot. After I wrote that article, my penpal in Michigan sent me a big box of battered tattered stained church cookbooks that she didnt know what to do with! 🙂 If nothing else they become great reference material for writing. MUST send you a real letter–I am months behind on all of my snail mail correspondence. xo,Thanks for writing about the fair – I wish you could have taken pictures of the kitchen display!

  12. I am really Glad i discovered this website.Added sandychatter.wordpress.com to my bookmark!

  13. I have a cook book that appears to be printed in 1905. The cover is printed on some kind of cloth material and the pages are not of the paper we use today. The book contains recipes from local members of the town and advertisements from local businesses. One advertisement is of a hotel offering rooms for a daily rate of $2.00 The name of the cook book is “The Elma Cook Book” this is from the town of Elma, Iwoa. Can someone tell me what this book might be worth?? Thank you Angie

    • Maybe someone will write in, Angie, who might have some idea what the cookbook is worth. Much depends on condition of your book. You might check with some dealers who specialize in used cookbooks. There is Powell’s in Portland Oregon…and Janet Jarvits cookbook store in Pasadena, California. I used to know of others but havent kept up since I began doing most of my buying on the internet. I wouldnt personally know what it’s worth anymore than I know what most of my own church or club cookbooks are worth. It always shocks me when I see something I own listed at what I consider to be a fairly high price (over $20). Good luck with this!

    • Hello again, Angie:
I didnt think of this earlier. You might try writing to my friend & cookbook dealer Carolyn, CGCookbks@aol.com, and describe your book to her. She has been dealing in cookbooks for years.

  14. Oh my goodness! an amazing article dude. Thank you Nevertheless I am experiencing issue with ur rss . Don’t know why Unable to subscribe to it. Is there anyone getting identical rss downside? Anyone who knows kindly respond. Thnkx

    • I dont know the answer to this but hopefully someone who reads it and has subscribed might be able to offer some advice. – Thanks for writing! Sandy

    • Thank you, Rene. Please visit my blog often & let me know if you see anything else that you like! I have received a lot of input about battered, tattered, stained pages in a church cookbook – which leads me to think I should be spending more time writing more about books like these.

  16. Im impressed, I must say. extremely rarely do I discovered a blog thats each educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, youve hit the nail on the head. Your opinion is outstanding; the matter are a few things that not lots of individuals are speaking intelligently concerning. Im extremely happy that I stumbled across this in my rummage around for something about it.

  17. Howdy, i browse your blog sometimes and that i own the same one and that i was just wondering if you get plenty of spam comments? If thus how does one stop it, any plugin or something you’ll advise? i purchase most lately its driving me mad so any help is very much appreciated.

    • Hi, Lenore – well, I review everything including all the posts that wordpost has put into a spam category. most of the time those messages (such as yours) arent spam at all. Well, if you are on wordpress you could request heightened restrictions if you think you are getting too much spam – but then you might miss out on something really good, too!

  18. Great article. Waiting for more.

    • I’m writing as fast as I can, Hassie – unfortunately, not every thing appeals to every one – but I hope you will check back often!

  19. Awesome job on the blog, thanks!

  20. Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

    • Gee, Phylis, I would have to tell someody too – your 4 yr old will be forever scarred by sea shells and later on will have no idea why!

  21. Hello there! This post could not be written any better! Reading through this post reminds me of my old room mate! He always kept talking about this. I will forward this post to him. Pretty sure he will have a good read. Thank you for sharing!

  22. I’m not sure exactly why but this site is loading very slow for me. Is anyone else having this issue or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.

  23. Please let me know if you’re looking for a writer for your weblog. You have some really good articles and I believe I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I’d really like to write some articles for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please blast me an e-mail if interested. Regards!

    • Well, Renetta – that depends. What kind of writing do you do? I know that I don’t know everything – and it could be nice to have another person’s thoughts and ideas posted. – tell me more. Sandy

    • sorry if a message of yours got lost, Gilberto! Am sure it wasnt at my end because I go through all of the messages and approve anything that provides me with positive feedback – or even when its not so positive but gives me ideas about what my readers want to see. I’ve had something like that happen to me with emails from time to time and I just HATE when that happens!

  41. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet smart so I’m not 100% positive. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Appreciate it

    • Dear Jen,
I don’t know much about this either and a friend set up the blog for me – but it didn’t cost me anything. I think if you search wordpress you may be able to find the information you need to set up your own blog. Let me know how you do!

My blog site is in the very same area of interest as yours and my users would genuinely benefit from some of the information you present here. Please let me know if this alright with you. Cheers!

    • Hi Arlen, Not at all – I do the same thing, if I use someone else’s material or quote from them, I always refer my readers to the source. So, feel free! I hope we can exchange much information in the future….will check out your blog!

  43. Once I originally commented I clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a remark is added I get four emails with the same comment. Is there any method you may remove me from that service? Thanks!

I am sorry to learn that you are having problems – is there a place on the page where you can unsubscribe? Aside from that I don’t know what to suggest – maybe start reporting anything from my blog as spam so you don’t keep getting the messages? I’ve always had a hard time reaching “a real person” at wordpress so I’m not sure what else to suggest. I hope you are able to get this fixed. – Sandy

    • Did you happen to come across MORE battered. tattered. stained recipes in a church cookbook? That was posted on June 20th. Many of these old cookbooks are coming to me from a Michigan penpal with whom I have been corresponding since 1965 (she was my first cookbook penpal, actually). She says she gets a kick out of reading about them on my blog. For those of you who are interested in finding these little gems, check with your used book stores – sometimes they are so battered & tattered that no one wants them – and dealers will often sell them to you PDC (pretty darn cheap). So many collectors want pristine cookbooks – and back in the day, in the 1800s and early 1900s, a housewife would consider a cookbook mainly something just to cook with, not to keep clean and pristine because she is thinking of collecting them. Thank you for writing! – Sandy@ sandychatter

  162. Wow, cool post. I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real hard work to make a good article… but I procrastinate too much and never seem to get started. Thanks though.

    • Oh, I had to answer you, Stonelake@gmail – here’s the thing about writing; if you think too hard about the “whole picture” you may never sit down and start typing. It’s like wanting to write a book and becoming overwhelmed by all of the chapters and pages. Just do one page at a time. Sometimes I get an idea and jot down something that appeals to me about the idea. I may not find time to write for a week or two but that idea is still there germinating. Write about the things you like the most. That’s when I really got going – I collet cookbooks and cookie jars and recipe boxes – so its just like talking to friends about the things you like. I hope you will get started today! Regards, Sandy

    • well to tell the truth, I didnt set it up. a friend of mine who edits a newsletter and has her own blogs set it up for me to just – start writing and posting. My first post was in March 2009. • Sorry, I dont know the answer to this but maybe someone else does and will respond to your inquiry. You know, sometimes when you visit a blog or a website, selected music comes on – I came across something like this while checking on a particular church and the music was wonderful. So my GUESS is there MUST be a way to combine both fields and I wish you much luck in your endeavor.

  305. I’m really into photography and would quite like a job involving it however i do NOT want to take pictures of people (weddings and stuff), i like taking arty/creative pictures. I also love writing and I have been thinking of writing for a teenage magazine and hopefully being able to get photography in there as well. Has anybody got any ideas on what job I could do that involves my kind of photography and writing and how I could get there. At the moment I’m 16..

    • why don’t you check the submission requirements for teen magazines, such as Seventeen or Teen Vogue? If you want to write for a magazine the #1 thing to do is to study that magazine from cover to cover, learn their requirements and go from there. I hope you do well with yor photography. Are you taking classes? When I inherited my father’s Nikon SLR camera, a girlfriend and I signed up for beginning photog classes at a community college. What fun! After 4 or 5 weeks of classroom instruction, we were allowed into the dark room…..I LOVE photography, especially B&W – and I love creative pictures too. Good luck with that.

  308. I really relate to that post. Thanks for the info.

  309. Very good blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you recommend starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any recommendations? Kudos!

    • Dear Neil, The best advice I think I can offer is to decide what interests YOU most – and go from there. You need to have a passion for the topic in order to keep writng about it. Certainly, I think a free platform like wordpress is a great starting ground. It’s easy to become overwhelmed but start out with baby steps. When I first started writing (on a Smith Corona portable typewriter early 1960s) – I found the Writer’s Market a most valuable guide and my first magazine sales were sources I found in the Writer’s Market. Well, who could have imagined the internet, back then?
But write about whatever you love. I love cooking and cookbooks and recipe boxes and my kitchen – and never tire of any of it … there is always something new popping up to provide inspiration. Let me know how you are doing. – Sandy

  310. Very nice post, i certainly love this website, keep on it

  311. Youre so cool! I dont suppose Ive learn something like this before. So good to find somebody with some unique ideas on this subject. realy thank you for beginning this up. this website is something that is needed on the net, somebody with somewhat originality. helpful job for bringing something new to the internet! Some really superb info , Sword lily I found this.

  312. My girlfriend and I talk about this every now and then but very rarely agree on it. She use to believe we could not discuss it without yelling. We actually don`t agree on many things anyway so this was really no different. I am an author for car coverge review and she`s usually giving her 2 cents in and wants me too put her opinion in my articles and when I don`t I`m being a creep or so she tells me.

    • Had to chuckle, Joshua. My personal solution RE writing is not to share any of it with anyone until its published. Years ago I did it this way because I didnt WANT input from people who might not share my point of view – at least not BEFORE I get it posted. Once I post an article, it’s fine with me if people write to say they like/dont like what I had to say. And I didnt want anyone ever accusing me of plagiarism. You might want to just – not share anything ahead of time. lol. good luck with that.

  430. Great layout! Where did you get that layout?

  431. My grandma gave me my braham district covenant church cookbook in 1962, the year I graduated from high school. I have used through all the past years up until now. Tattered and torn, it begs to be reborn. Wish I could find another copy. The Lemon Merangue Pie recipes in it are divine. And the Cinnamon Thumbs are a favorite of my daughters. The Apple Crisp recipe is simple, delicious, amd memorized. I was Minnesota born and raised and now live in northern California. Thanks for your blog. Delightful!

    • Hi, thanks for writing – maybe someone reading this will recognize the title. Was this cookbook published in 1962? Is there anything else you can tell me about it? I will try to help you search for another copy. Was this a Minnesota cookbook? Any details you can provide will be useful.
I enjoyed your message–it is so reminiscent of the single cookbook many cooks use for years – my first one was a 1961 Methodist church cookbook that my father bought from a coworker at Formica for one dollar each–he bought 3 copies; one for my mother, one each for my sister and me. It was that cookbook that inspired me to look for others like it–I had no idea what a can of worms I was opening!
      Thank you again, Sandy
